Djamel Abdelkader Zighed received his Master in Computer and Automatic Science in 1982 and his PhD in computer science in 1985 both from University Lyon I. He was as assistant professor at University Lyon 1 in 1984-1987. In 1987, he joined the University Lyon II where he worked as lecturer (1987-1991), professor (1991-2000) and 1st class professor (2000 - present). He is the founder and was director (1995-2002) of the ERIC laboratory (laboratory for development of methods and software for knowledge engineering, and more specifically automatic Knowledge Discovery in Databases).

The Hacker Ethic

Despite the title The Hacker Ethic is a philosophical essay contrasting the Western capitalist world view with those of hackers. In this context, hackers are those passionate about any subject, not just computers.

The book starts with an essay by Linus Torvalds and finishes with a thoughtful 75-page essay by Manual Cassels called “Informationalism and the Network Society”. At its heart though, is the paradox summed up on page 60, “Present capitalism is based on the exploitation of scientific communism”. This simply means companies make money based on information provided by scientists for free. This results in an ethical quandary. Companies eagerly seize information freely provided by hackers yet withhold information discovered by themselves. An indefensible position.

Himamen claims hackers work because what they’re doing interests them and disseminating what they learn brings the respect of their peers while others work for money and enjoy the envy of their peers. His arguments are well illustrated with ideas from Plato, through medieval village life, protestantism, academia, the industrial revolution and more. He concludes the information revolution makes work central to our lives, soaking up the time and energy necessary for play, for the pursuit of personal passions.

He isn’t whistling “Dixie”. Who do you know with a hobby? How many talk to their families? Most spend their free time watching actors pretend to be members of passionate families. She is an invited expert on the W3C XSL Working Group, and she was voted ActiveState Activator’s Choice XSLT Programmer of the Year in 2002. She spends much of her spare time answering people’s queries on the XSL-List and xmlschema-dev mailing lists.

Microsoft SQL Server is a relational model database server produced by Microsoft. Its primary query languages are T-SQL and ANSI SQL.
The code base for MS SQL Server (prior to version 7.0) originated in Sybase SQL Server, and was Microsoft’s entry to the enterprise-level database market, competing against Oracle, IBM, and, later, Sybase itself. Microsoft, Sybase and Ashton-Tate originally teamed up to create and market the first version named SQL Server 1.0 for OS/2 (about 1989) which was essentially the same as Sybase SQL Server 3.0 on Unix, VMS, etc. Microsoft SQL Server 4.2 was shipped around 1992 (available bundled with Microsoft OS/2 version 1.3). Later Microsoft SQL Server 4.21 for Windows NT was released at the same time as Windows NT 3.1. Microsoft SQL Server v6.0 was the first version designed for NT, and did not include any direction from Sybase.

About the time Windows NT was released, Sybase and Microsoft parted ways and each pursued their own design and marketing schemes. Microsoft negotiated exclusive rights to all versions of SQL Server written for Microsoft operating systems. Later, Sybase changed the name of its product to Adaptive Server Enterprise to avoid confusion with Microsoft SQL Server. Until 1994, Microsoft’s SQL Server carried three Sybase copyright notices as an indication of its origin.

Since parting ways, several revisions have been done independently. SQL Server 7.0 was a rewrite from the legacy Sybase code. It was succeeded by SQL Server 2000, which was the first edition to be launched in a variant for the IA-64 architecture.

In the eight years since release of Microsoft’s previous SQL Server product (SQL Server 2000), advancements have been made in performance, the client IDE tools, and several complementary systems that are packaged with SQL Server 2005. These include: an ETL tool (SQL Server Integration Services or SSIS), a Reporting Server, an OLAP and data mining server (Analysis Services), and several messaging technologies, specifically Service Broker and Notification Services.

Algebraic Geometry is the study of systems of polynomial equations in one or more variables, asking such questions as: Does the system have finitely many solutions, and if so how can one find them? And if there are infinitely many solutions, how can they be described and manipulated?

The solutions of a system of polynomial equations form a geometric object called a variety; the corresponding algebraic object is an ideal. There is a close relationship between ideals and varieties which reveals the intimate link between algebra and geometry. Written at a level appropriate to undergraduates, this book covers such topics as the Hilbert Basis Theorem, the Nullstellensatz, invariant theory, projective geometry, and dimension theory.

The algorithms to answer questions such as those posed above are an important part of algebraic geometry. Although the algorithmic roots of algebraic geometry are old, it is only in the last forty years that computational methods have regained their earlier prominence. New algorithms, coupled with the power of fast computers, have led to both theoretical advances and interesting applications, for example in robotics and in geometric theorem proving.

In addition to enhancing the text of the second edition, with over 200 pages reflecting changes to enhance clarity and correctness, this third edition of Ideals, Varieties and Algorithms includes: A significantly updated section on Maple in Appendix C; Updated information on AXIOM, CoCoA, Macaulay 2, Magma, Mathematica and SINGULAR; A shorter proof of the Extension Theorem presented in Section 6 of Chapter 3.
